AN INCIPIT GAME · STILL BEING BUILT

Commedia

Inferno · Purgatorio · Paradiso

An open-world journey through Dante's Divine Comedy, faithful to the poem canto by canto. Inferno comes first, then Purgatorio and Paradiso.

Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita
mi ritrovai per una selva oscura,
ché la diritta via era smarrita.

Midway on the road of our life, I found myself in a dark wood, for the straight way was lost. INFERNO I, 1 TO 3

TAP SOMEONE TO SAY HELLO

THREE BOOKS, ONE JOURNEY

A hundred cantos. Three games.

Dante wrote the poem in three parts. Each one will be its own game, and we are building them in order.

AEDIFICAMUS · INFERNO FIRST

BUILDING NOW

Inferno

34 CANTOS · GUIDE: VIRGIL

Down through the nine circles of Hell, from the dark wood to the bottom of the world.

NEXT

Purgatorio

33 CANTOS · GUIDE: VIRGIL, THEN BEATRICE

Up the mountain of Purgatory, terrace by terrace, to the garden at the top.

LAST

Paradiso

33 CANTOS · GUIDE: BEATRICE, THEN ST. BERNARD

Through the heavenly spheres to the vision of God.

THE WAY DOWN

The nine circles of Inferno.

In the poem, Hell is a great funnel. Each circle is smaller than the one above it, and the sins get worse the deeper you go. This is the map the first game follows.

  1. ILimboThe virtuous who never knew Christ. Virgil's own home.
  2. IILustSouls blown forever on a dark wind.
  3. IIIGluttonyCold, heavy rain, and Cerberus.
  4. IVGreedThe hoarders and the wasters, rolling great weights.
  5. VWrathThe marsh of the Styx.
  6. VIHeresyBurning tombs inside the city of Dis.
  7. VIIViolenceA river of blood, a wood of suicides, and burning sand.
  8. VIIIFraudMalebolge: ten ditches of liars, flatterers and thieves.
  9. IXTreacheryCocytus, the frozen lake at the very bottom.

And then, through a narrow passage, out again to see the stars.

HOW WE ARE MAKING IT

Dante first, game second.

FAITHFUL

We follow the poem canto by canto, in Dante's order. We are not adding a new story to it.

OPEN WORLD

Walk each circle yourself, and meet the people Dante meets there.

32-BIT ART

Drawn as pixel art and upscaled, so it looks sharp on a big screen.

ITALIAN

Cutscenes are spoken in Dante's Italian, with English subtitles.

l'amor che move il sole e l'altre stelle.

The love that moves the sun and the other stars.

PARADISO XXXIII, 145 · THE LAST LINE OF THE POEM

QUESTIONS

Common questions

When is it coming out?

Not yet. Inferno comes first, and we will let everyone on the Incipit Letter know as soon as there is something to play.

Why Dante?

The Divine Comedy is the greatest Catholic poem ever written, and it is already a journey: down through Hell, up the mountain of Purgatory, and into Heaven. It reads like a game waiting to be played.

Will Purgatorio and Paradiso be games too?

Yes. Commedia is planned as a trilogy, one game for each book of the poem.
